Back Pain Physiotherapy in Rockingham

Back pain physiotherapy treatment in rockingham at sage physio rockingham

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy, yet no two people experience it in quite the same way. Whether your pain started suddenly after lifting something, has gradually developed over months or years, or keeps returning despite previous treatment, understanding why it has occurred is the first step towards lasting recovery.

At Sage Physio Rockingham, I take the time to understand your story, assess how your whole body moves, and identify the factors contributing to your symptoms. Rather than simply treating where it hurts, my goal is to help you recover with confidence and reduce the likelihood of your pain returning, but also to educate you on how to identify the potential buildup towards another episode, and empower you with self management strategies to act quickly and prevent them from occurring.

Is physiotherapy right for my back pain?

Physiotherapy can help with many different types of back pain, including:

  • Acute back pain or “pulled” muscles

  • Persistent or recurring back pain

  • Disc-related pain

  • Sciatica and nerve pain

  • Facet joint pain

  • Sacroiliac (SIJ) pain

  • Arthritis-related back pain

  • Back pain during pregnancy

  • Back pain after sport or exercise

  • Back pain associated with prolonged sitting or work

Whether your symptoms have been present for a few days or many years, a thorough assessment can help identify the factors contributing to your pain and guide the most appropriate treatment.

Understanding your back pain

Many people understandably focus on finding what is wrong with their back.

In reality, one of the most important questions is often why your back became painful in the first place.

Back pain is rarely caused by a single factor. Previous injuries, reduced strength, changes in movement patterns, stiffness in other areas of the body, work demands, lifestyle, stress, and training loads can all influence how your back functions.

That’s why I assess more than just the painful area.

By looking at how your spine, hips, pelvis, legs and surrounding muscles work together, we can often identify contributing factors that may otherwise be overlooked. This whole-body approach helps guide treatment and provides a clearer pathway towards lasting recovery.

What happens during your appointment?

Your initial consultation includes plenty of time to understand your symptoms and your goals.

We’ll discuss:

  • how and when your pain began

  • what aggravates or eases your symptoms

  • previous injuries or episodes

  • your work, hobbies and activity levels

  • your general health and lifestyle

A thorough physical assessment may include:

  • posture

  • spinal movement

  • hip and pelvic movement

  • muscle strength

  • flexibility

  • balance

  • walking and movement patterns

  • nerve testing where appropriate

If you have scans or imaging, we’ll review these together and explain what they do — and don’t — tell us.

How I treat back pain

Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, but may include a combination of:

  • Hands-on physiotherapy

  • Joint mobilisation

  • Soft tissue and myofascial release

  • Dry needling

  • Movement retraining

  • Individualised rehabilitation exercises

  • Strength and mobility programmes

  • Advice on lifting, work and daily activities

  • Education to help you better understand your condition

Treatment isn’t just about reducing pain today. My aim is to help restore healthy movement, build confidence and give you the knowledge and tools to manage your back well into the future.

Do I need a scan?

Not necessarily.

Many people recover very well from back pain without requiring imaging.

Research has shown that findings such as disc bulges, arthritis and degeneration are extremely common on MRI scans, even in people with no pain at all.

A detailed clinical assessment is often far more helpful than a scan in determining the most appropriate treatment.

If your symptoms suggest that further investigation is needed, I’ll discuss this with you and, where appropriate, recommend speaking with your GP.

Why does my back pain keep coming back?

Recurring back pain is incredibly common.

Often, the pain settles but the underlying contributing factors remain.

These may include:

  • reduced strength

  • decreased movement control

  • stiffness

  • altered movement habits

  • returning too quickly to activity

  • previous injuries

One of my biggest goals is to help identify these contributing factors so you can better understand your body and reduce the risk of future flare-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I rest my back?

While short periods of rest can sometimes help during severe pain, prolonged rest is usually not recommended. Staying as active as your symptoms comfortably allow is often one of the most effective ways to support recovery.

Will I receive exercises?

Yes. Rehabilitation is an important part of treatment. Any exercises prescribed will be tailored to your symptoms, goals and current ability.

Can physiotherapy help if I’ve had pain for years?

Absolutely. Persistent back pain is often more complex than recent injuries, but many people can still make significant improvements with a thorough assessment, personalised treatment and a structured rehabilitation plan.

Do you treat disc bulges and sciatica?

Yes. Disc-related pain and sciatica are common presentations. Treatment focuses on reducing pain, improving movement, addressing contributing factors and helping you return to your usual activities as safely and confidently as possible.

When should I seek help?

  • Your pain has lasted more than 1–2 weeks.

  • Your back pain keeps returning.

  • You're avoiding activities because of pain.

  • It's affecting your sleep or work.

  • You're unsure what's causing your symptoms.

  • You want to prevent it from becoming a long-term problem.

Why choose Sage Physio Rockingham?

What matters most to me is taking the time to listen, understand your goals, and develop a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically to you.
